How to Edit AI Content to Sound Natural: A Line-by-Line Method

A repeatable editing pass for AI-generated drafts: what to cut, what to add, how to restore rhythm and voice, with before-and-after examples you can copy.

AI drafts are rarely wrong. They are flat. Editing one is less about fixing errors and more about putting a person back into the text. This is the pass we use ourselves, in order, with examples. Budget fifteen minutes for an 800-word article once you have done it a few times.

Pass 1: Structure (2 minutes)

  • Delete the introduction paragraph that restates the title. Start with the first useful sentence.
  • Delete the conclusion that summarises what you just read. End on the last useful point or a single next step.
  • If every section is the same length, merge two short ones or split the one with the most to say.
  • Turn at least one bullet list back into a paragraph. Lists are where AI hides the absence of reasoning.

Pass 2: Sentences (5 minutes)

Before: "Furthermore, it is important to note that regular exercise can potentially offer a wide range of benefits for individuals of all ages, including improved cardiovascular health, enhanced mood, and better sleep quality."

After: "Exercise helps at any age. The heart gets stronger, sleep gets deeper, and most people feel the mood lift within two weeks."

What changed: the transition went, the hedge ("can potentially") went, "individuals" became "people", the three-item list became a short sentence followed by a longer one, and a concrete detail ("two weeks") was added. Do this to every sentence over 25 words.

Pass 3: Words (3 minutes)

Pass 4: Voice (5 minutes)

  1. Add one thing you actually know or did: a result, a mistake, a client, a date.
  2. Add one opinion. "This is overrated" or "this is the step people skip".
  3. Address the reader once as "you" with a specific situation.
  4. Read the whole piece aloud. Rewrite every sentence you stumble on.

Where a tool fits

Passes 2 and 3 are mechanical, and that is what FreeHumanizerAI automates: it rewrites every sentence, removes the stock phrases, varies the rhythm and checks that your numbers and names survived. Passes 1 and 4 need you. Run the tool first, then do structure and voice by hand; it is faster than the other way round. Check the result in the AI detector if you want to see which sentences still read as machine-written.
