Can Turnitin Detect AI Writing? What Students Should Know in 2026

Turnitin's AI indicator: how it works, what its published false-positive rate means, what it cannot see, and why nobody outside Turnitin can test it.

Yes. Turnitin has shipped an AI writing indicator since April 2023, and it is on by default for many institutions. It is a separate score from the similarity (plagiarism) report, and students usually cannot see it; instructors can. This guide explains what it does, based on Turnitin's own documentation, and what it does not.

How the indicator works

Turnitin splits a submission into overlapping segments of a few hundred words and runs each through a classifier trained on human and AI-generated academic writing. It reports the percentage of the document it believes was AI-generated and highlights those passages. It needs at least 300 words of prose and, as of 2024, also attempts to flag AI text that has been paraphrased by another tool.

What Turnitin says about accuracy

  • Document-level false-positive rate below 1% for documents with over 20% AI writing, according to Turnitin.
  • Scores under 20% are hidden because Turnitin found them unreliable.
  • An asterisk appears on scores between 1% and 20% in some configurations to signal low confidence.
  • Turnitin's guidance to instructors: the indicator is not proof and should start a conversation, not end one.

What nobody can honestly tell you

Turnitin has no public API or free checker. Any website that says its humanizer "passes Turnitin" either has an institutional account it is using against the terms of service, or is guessing based on other detectors. We measure against ZeroGPT and show those results on our homepage; we do not claim Turnitin results because we cannot test them. If someone else claims they can, ask how.

What this means for you

  1. Read your course's AI policy. Many now allow AI for brainstorming or outlining if you disclose it.
  2. Keep drafts and version history. If you are questioned, process evidence matters more than any score.
  3. If you used AI for a first draft and the course allows it, rewrite it in your own voice rather than only running it through a tool. Our guide on rewriting a ChatGPT essay covers that.
  4. If you wrote it yourself and were flagged anyway, see Is my essay flagged as AI?.
FreeHumanizerAI is a writing tool, not a way around your school's rules. Use it to make permitted AI-assisted drafts read naturally, and disclose AI use where your institution requires it.
