Is My Essay Flagged as AI?
Is My Essay Flagged as AI? Why It Happens and What to Do
Your own essay was flagged as AI-written. Why detectors produce false positives, how to prove authorship, and how to revise formal writing so it reads like you.
If a detector says your essay is AI-written and you know it is not, you are not alone and you are not out of options. Detectors score word patterns, and the patterns they look for overlap heavily with what schools teach as good academic writing: formal tone, clear topic sentences, balanced paragraphs, no slang. Read how accurate AI detectors are first if you want the mechanics.
Why human essays get flagged
- You wrote in formal, textbook English with a limited vocabulary. Non-native writers are affected most.
- Every paragraph follows the same shape: claim, two supporting sentences, summary.
- You leaned on standard transitions: "Moreover", "In addition", "In conclusion".
- You used Grammarly or a similar tool that smoothed sentences into a uniform rhythm.
- The essay is short, so a few predictable sentences dominate the score.
Prove your authorship first
Before you rewrite anything, collect evidence. Version history in Google Docs or Word shows the essay being built over hours or days. Keep your outline, notes, draft files and the sources you read. If your institution uses Turnitin, ask whether the AI indicator was the only signal; Turnitin itself tells instructors not to treat the score as proof. Most academic-integrity processes allow you to explain your process and show drafts.
Then revise so it reads like you
- Add one concrete detail per paragraph that only you would know: a specific example, a figure from a source, a counter-argument you considered.
- Vary sentence length on purpose. Follow a long sentence with a short one.
- Replace stock transitions with the actual logic ("Because of this", "That leaves one problem").
- Use first person where the assignment allows it.
- Read it aloud. Anything you would never say out loud, rewrite in your own words.
You can paste the essay into our AI detector to see which sentences carry the score, then fix those by hand. We do not recommend running your own human-written essay through a humanizer; it is your writing already, and editing it yourself is faster and keeps your voice. If the draft was AI-assisted, our guide on rewriting a ChatGPT essay in your own voice is the right one.
